Sweets, life is more delicious with them, right? We heard your answer here. However, excessive consumption of sugar, the most commonly used ingredient to sweeten recipes, has several negative points.
And the situation in Brazil is worrying. According to the Ministry of Health, Brazilians consume twice the amount of sugar recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) per day.
To help you better understand how safe it is to consume and how to have a sweet day-to-day life even with less sugar, we wrote this text. After all, our goal is for you to have a healthy and surreal life, without giving up the best flavors.
What happens in the body when we eat sugar?
Have you ever noticed how happy you feel when you eat sugary foods? The ingredient stimulates the production of dopamine, one of the neurotransmitters that causes well-being, known as the happiness hormone.
Sounds pretty good, doesn't it?
Unfortunately, this happiness comes at a price to our health.
The bacteria present in the mouth also like the ingredient, so they feed on it and, thus, cavities and other oral problems appear.
At the same time, the pancreas produces insulin to digest this sugar, causing an insulin spike. In the long term, this process can cause insulin resistance. In the short term, it makes you prone to eating more, as it does not satisfy you because it is released too quickly into the body.
If you consume too much of the substance, the body cannot burn it, so it stores it in the form of fat.
So, is it best to cut sugar from your diet?
The ideal is to consume no more than 50 grams of sugar per day. According to the WHO, this is a safe amount. However, it is very difficult to stay within this limit. A can of soda has 37 grams of the ingredient, on average. The substance is also hidden in salty foods, like that coxinha you also love.
According to experts, almost all foods contain sugar. Therefore, it is unrealistic to say that we will cut it out completely. We also know that radicalization is a dangerous path. Cutting out substances, even the most harmful ones, can lead to binge eating.
Is there nothing to be done, then? Fortunately, yes, as we will show later.
Tips for a diet with less sugar, but full of sweetness
The sugar in fruits, vegetables and milk does not fall within the 50 grams of the substance considered safe for consumption. The big problem is the addition of the substance. In processed foods, it is common to add the ingredient to make them tastier, brighter (that's right) and even to make them last longer.
1. Try unsweetened coffee (and juice too)
We like sweet foods and we love coffee. If you are like most Brazilians, you probably drink several cups throughout the day. Are we right? Then try to enjoy our favorite drink without sugar. Many people start to prefer it over time.
The same tip applies to juices. Fruits have sugar, so that orange juice can be very tasty without adding sugar, huh?
2. Break the food monotony
Your whole life you've been a real ant. The change won't happen overnight. But giving other flavors a chance will show you how much more delicious there is besides sugar. Instead of eating only bread, yogurt, and cookies for breakfast, try oatmeal, fruit, and milk, for example.
3. Sweeten with fruits and natural sweeteners
One way to make recipes sweet and sugar-free is to use some fruit. Bananas are an excellent option for pancakes and healthy desserts. The riper they are, the tastier they are. Crushing raisins is also a good option to sweeten your recipes. Dates are another delicious fruit for those who love sweets.
Choose stevia, xylitol, erythritol, maltitol and thaumatin, which contain natural ingredients, over industrial sweeteners.
4. Choose foods without added substances
As we have shown, the food industry adds sugar to foods to appeal to the taste buds of people with a sweet tooth, increase their shelf life and make them taste brighter.
However, there are options without added ingredients. This means that no extra amounts of the substance were added to the product. This is the case with Bold bars. They contain only the sugar from the snack components.
To better understand the difference between no added sugar and zero sugar, we have already dedicated anarticle to the topic.
Demerara, coconut, honey: is there any type of sugar that is better for your health?
White sugar is what we call empty food. It has no nutrients. Furthermore, it has undergone an industrial process. That is why demerara sugar, coconut sugar and honey itself have emerged as healthier alternatives to white sugar. They have nutrients, but we cannot abuse them either. The mechanisms in the body when we ingest honey, demerara sugar or coconut sugar are the same as those of white sugar.
Therefore, they are included in the quantification of the daily limit of the substance. Therefore, consume in moderation as well.
